We Believe the Stage is Medicine

Seniors in Play is a San Antonio-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Emmy-nominated, ALMA Award-winning actor Tony Plana on a simple but radical conviction: that theatrical expression is not a luxury for the privileged few — it is a human need. And one that older adults are too often denied.

Social isolation among seniors is one of the most urgent public health crises of our time, linked to cognitive decline, depression, and shortened lives. We confront it directly — with art.

Through free acting classes, storytelling circles, and live performance opportunities, we meet older adults where they are — at senior centers, in community spaces, across Bexar County — and hand them something no prescription can offer: a reason to get up, get out, and get on stage.

Since our founding, we currently serve 3800 senior adults across 13 centers, watching participants reclaim confidence, build genuine friendships, and surprise themselves with what they are capable of. We have seen the quiet ones find their voice. We have seen the grieving find laughter. We have seen people remember, with full-body certainty, that they are still very much alive.

That is the work. And we are nowhere near done.

Meet the Team

Behind every transformation is a team that refuses to mail it in. Our leadership brings deep expertise in the performing arts, nonprofit management, community development, and the particular kind of relentless optimism this work demands.
